Our Learning Journey
Autumn 1 -
This half term, our focus texts to support our literacy learning are: Amazing, The Little Red Hen and The Gingerbread Man. We have made lots of new friends in Reception and have learned about all the different ways we are amazing, special and unique. The story 'The Little Red Hen' supported our learning all about Harvest. We visited church and sang the song 'Dingle Dangle Scarecrow' for our Harvest service. We had a visit from 'The Gingerbread Man' who left us some ingredients to make our gingerbread men, they were delicious! The Gingerbread Man left us a message, "teehee, you can't catch me", so we made 'Look Out' posters to warn everybody that The Gingerbread man is on the loose! We found The Gingerbread Man's jelly buttons with sounds on all around school and made simple CVC words to practise our segmenting and blending!
Our Learning Environment
Playing and exploring underpins our EYFS provision. We provide our children with a balance of child-initiated and adult-led learning opportunities. Our children have opportunities to initiate and share their own learning with or alongside other children and adults and engage with adult-led activities to support and further their learning experiences. This is supported by our carefully sequenced Reception curriculum that we adapt to suit our children's needs and interests. We have a lovely outdoor environment that the children can explore in their puddle suits and wellies whatever the weather!
Our nurturing environment and support from our experienced staff ensures your child feels happy, safe and confident in our Reception to explore the learning environment and enable purposeful learning opportunities. To enhance our children's life experiences, the children will complete our Latchford Learning Bucket List during their time with us in both Nursery and Reception.
Reception Curriculum
Our curriculum has been carefully sequenced to encourage progress in all seven areas of learning. The seven areas of learning are as follows:
Prime areas:
- Personal Social and Emotional Development
- Physical Development
- Communication and Language
Specific areas:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the world
- Expressive Arts and Design
Phonics
Here at LSJ, we follow the phonics programme, 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds'.
Please find the Parent Guide to our new Phonics programme below:
https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/
Linking with this programme, to support Reading, we use 'Collins Big Cat' books and all pupils have a log in to access an e-library at home.
Parents as Partners
Here at Latchford St James, we believe in having a good partnership with our parents and carers. Together we can shape your child's future and help them to become happy, resilient and lifelong learners.
You can help your child by:
- Sharing and enjoying books and stories with your child
- Encouraging your child to write for different purposes, for example shopping lists and birthday cards
- Provide opportunities for counting and looking out for numbers when out and about
- Encouraging your child to be independent when eating their lunch, getting dressed and to look after their own belongings
