INTENT
Learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. In our MFL curriculum we strive to enable children to express their ideas and thoughts in the Spanish language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. We aim to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world; provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes and equip pupils to study and work in other countries. MFL encourages children to broaden their vocabulary and practise and improve their speaking and listening skills.
IMPLEMENTATION
At Latchford St James CE School children have weekly 30 minute Spanish lessons in Key Stage 2 that are delivered by a specialist teacher from the Primary Languages Network. To promote an active learning of languages, a range of teaching methods are implemented to ensure that the children are developing their linguistic skills through listening, speaking, reading and writing in order to be secondary ready. Activities consist of a variety of creative ways to extend, embed and combine language skills, such as actions, rhymes, stories, song, grammar focus and video clips.
At the end of Key Stage 2 pupils are given the opportunity to visit Malaga in Spain for a five day residential to apply the language skills they have learned and immerse themselves in a different language and culture.
IMPACT
The intended impact of the MFL Curriculum is that the majority of children in KS2 are working at or above the expected level for their age. Pupils will have a good understanding of Spanish culture and be able to recognise and apply Spanish vocabulary verbally. They will be able to write a small amount of Spanish and this is built upon each year.
Class teachers will receive feedback from the specialist Spanish teacher about their pupils’ progress. The MFL subject leader will monitor work in each year group and speak to pupils regarding their views and attitudes towards lessons and activities.
